You're going to have to call PullRite and maybe send them some photos. It sounds to me that the bottom of your pin box has been damaged, causing the capture plate not to sit flat/flush with the pin box, and the recessed portion of the pin cannot slip into the hitch jaws because of the large gap between the pin box and plate.
