Texas Trailer Inspections

Vehicle Registration Renewal Notices in Texas are confusing. All have a message highlighted in light blue that a passing vehicle inspection is required. Even though it will be on your notice, this does not apply to lighter weight trailers:
05.06 Inspect All Trailers, Semitrailers, Pole Trailers, or Mobile Homes Exceeding 4,500 Pounds Actual Gross Weight or Registered Weight .
Clarification about your specific trailer can be found in the fee schedule on your renewal notice. Texas now collects 1/2 of the previous inspection fee that used to be collected by the inspection station. So if an inspection is required there will be a fee: INSPECTION FEE 7.50 near the bottom right of the form. If the amount is 0.00 then no inspection is required.

  • Sounds like somebody was deported from TX. I know a lot of states worse than TX. MD is certainly one of them :).

You only need to get it inspected if you plan to register it and have license plate on it. Since mobile home usually sit at the same site for years, you don't need to put license plate on it and renew it every year.

  • If u can get out of that wacko state. You couldn't pay me enough to live in Texas. Sorry Texans. 49 other better states to live in.
  • I know we've discussed the new system that enforces trailer inspections. This may apply to popups as well as tag-a-longs used by the Class A crowd. Thus why I dropped this into the General RVing Issues forum. I watch the forums pretty closely but haven't seen a discussion on the confusion caused by the Vehicle Registration Notice. I'm concerned a few folks may read the highlighted info at the top of the form and think that it applies to them when it actually doesn't. My apologies if I've repeated this information.
