Can somebody tell me what has actually happened here? The springs broke? The frame?
It seems to me that the transmission would have given out before the frame. The major weight of the horse trailer would have been on the trailer tires, right?
Thanks,

But the dealer told me that a half ton could tow anything I'd need....

Well then they should've went for the 1/2 ton and not the 1/4 ton Explorer Sport Trac!!!
Heck, even a WD hitch would've helped!
My BIL had a Ford Sport Trac, which is a pseudo-truck built on a Ford Exploder chassis. He wanted to rent a small U-Haul trailer to move some furniture, but U-Haul's policy was not to rent them for use on a Sport Trac. They are for "light duty" towing only. - Mike_LeClairExplorerYeah, I'm gonna go get some popcorn and a fresh beer. This could get interesting. Man, how many more months till spring?

OLD BISCUIT---Since I haven't a clue as to their problem, I doubt my guidance would be helpful..
hey really don't need a motel since they have an RV to sleep in.
Charity--food bank? I don't even know where they are in my area.
I guarantee they have a better phone than I do.
I help folks out all the time but sometimes it can't be done. You're also assuming these folks are penniless and foodless.
What they seem to need is a major repair which is way beyond a friendly comment.
Don't ask.....never know how one can be of help.
Didn't assume anything.....just posted suggestions as to what could possibly be of help because you asked.
Clueless.....a condition many folks now a day have. - John___AngelaExplorerWe hear it at the dealership all the time when we tell them they have to pay attention to weights. "I have a dually, I can put anything on this truck and still pull a horse trailer"

Exactly what help could be provided? Drop your trailer and tow theirs? A couple grand for a fix? Buy them a new truck?
I wouldn't have a clue on what they needed or how it could be fixed.
A little friendly guidance.
A ride to a local motel.
A ride to local charity.......food bank depending on needs.
A offer to call some one for them.
Just a friendly face.
Amazing what just stopping and asking "Can I Help You" does for those in a 'situation'
Folks on here might have an impression of me.......
BUT I will stop and offer help to anyone.
I've been on the other side of good times and I can second what OB said, it's amazing how little it takes to alleviate a sense of despair. Paying it forward doesn't require much, sometimes like OB suggested a friendly face in a bad situation is enough.
With that said I don't see anything wrong with poking fun at this this photo; no one is wishing harm to the drivers of the rig and it is a past tense photo. - rockhillmanorExplorer II

They probably will go another 3,000 miles that way with no problem.
And they are probably related to this guy that was parked next to me at a CG.
:B
Wow! And this guy HAS a WDH!And believed the dealer knew how to set it up,
or is certain he didn't need to scale the combination to set it up properly, or felt he could carry a quarter cord of firewood in the rear cargo area!
Kidding aside, I'm always concerned these folks do not understand the potential hazards they are to their and their family's safety and to the safety of fellow motorists. I'd favor implementation of a required driver's license endorsement for towing.
When I bought my TT after the walk thru I told the dealership to pick out the right hitch for it, hook up and set it up to my tow vehicle while I went out to lunch.
Words can't describe what it looked like and all that was wrong in how they did it and the wrong ball mount they picked out AND of all things the incorrect size ball!!
So I CAN see how an 'inexperienced' new camper can get on the road with these disasters.
I just walked back in and scratched off the 2 hours they charged me for nothing and picked out the correct hitch set up and did it my self on the lot. :R - JohnG3Explorer IILucy, Did you take the rocks out?
