Tornado hits Cherrystone Campground in Virginia

A tornado touched down in Northampton County Thursday morning
Around 8:45 a.m. there was a police scanner report of possibly five patients seeking help at Cherrystone Campground, where there reports of overturned campers and a fallen tree on a tent.

We were at that campground a few times in the past.
  • This is sad. I'm really surprised at how many people did not evacuate, but stayed in their rig. :E My goodness, have they never seen what a tornado can do to a trailer park? I know the hail was big but why, oh, why would they not high tail it to a sturdier building, like the all-cinder-block bath houses that are in most campgrounds? Better to be popped in the head with a clump of ice, than to be severely injured when a tornado picks up your aluminum camper and slams you to the ground.
  • 2 dead, many injuries. Prayers and thoughts for everyone.

  • Dumb weather. Pictures I have seen of damage in the campground, particularly of trees twisted and snapped off at the trunk several feet off the ground would certainly suggest a tornado or a rather strong land falling waterspout. Prayers and condolences to the families affected........
