Towing ~8000 with new F150.. fun or scary?

Im considering downsizing my current F350 diesel to a more tame F150 crewcab 6 1/2ft box with the max towing and payload package. Anyone towing large trailers with this truck. Are you comfortable towing with it or is it scary & working very hard? My F350 tows my trailer easy right now. Trailer is in sig, 28.8' Nash including hitch and bumper. approx 7300lbs on scale and 850lb pin weight.

What do you think? New F150 or New F350?

  • F150 does fine for me towing 7880 gvwr trailer. But then I am not coming off a diesel.
    New F150 will have more power and payload than mine.

    He was asking about a New F150 or a New F350. Looks like he is going to buy a new vehicle, but wanted advice on F150 versus F350. To me, the F250 is the best of both worlds - downgrade from the current F350, but enough truck to not have to ask if he would be comfortable pulling his rig.


    Pulling off the overload spring would give him an F250 except for the badge on the fender. Unless the F250 in question came with the package that included the overload spring, because those trucks exist too. My point is that they're basically the same thing so spending a bunch of money to switch from one to the other doesn't make a lot of sense. Obviously going to an F150 is a big enough difference it can warrant a change for some folks in some circumstances.
  • I towed the trailer in my sig with a F150 EB Supercrew Max tow. 5.5 bed, air bags, Load E tires, and a tune. Power was great and no issues powering up mountains. But I would say I was about 1000 lbs over a real comfortable ride. We tend to do 400-500 miles a day. My tow vehicle now is perfect for towing and a daily driver.
  • If the truck is paid for or nearly paid for i would keep it. In the end the 350 is better especially if its a diesel. You can load what you want and go the 150 you have to be careful. What year 350 btw

  • Well I went from an F150 Max Tow Super Crew 5.5" bed (no HD payload) towing 7300lbs @31' to a 2500 CC LB. Way, way better IMO.I had E rated tires and Super Springs added too. 1857lbs for payload. I won't even think about going more than 6000lbs with a 1/2 ton. Sure lots of guys do it.
    But then you read the occasional I upgraded to a 3/4 ton and can't believe the difference.
    It's the "You don't know what you don't know" thing.
    Sine you're looking at gassers then why not a 3/4 ton?
  • An F150 with max towing and max payload is essentially a 3/4 ton! Nothing wrong with it if your combo is setup properly!

I guess I'd say a lot depends on how you use the trailer. If you don't leave the island much and mainly just camp fairly close to home I would be more apt to do it than if you plan to haul it on longer trips into the Rockies regularly.

  • I have a 2012 F150 Ecoboost. I also have a 29.5' (33' OAL) travel trailer. My EB tows this trailer very nicely. I weight in at about 7,200# loaded. Our previous trailer was about the same length, but closer to 8,000# - 8,500#. I was not comfortable towing that (different TV).
    This was my first experience towing at all. I was very surprised at the difference in 7200# and 8000#+.
    So, if you are 7300# scale weight, the F150 should tow very nicely. If you are ~8000#, to me, there is a big difference.
    If F150 or F350 are both options, seems like an F250 might be your vehicle of choice. Less than the F350 and you won't have to ask how it will tow your trailer.
    One thing, in an F150, you won't have a Honda in the bed while towing the trailer.
