towing a Geo Tracker question.

Just bought a Tracker automatic 4WD ... assuming that is good for towing 4 down ? just kick the transfer case into neutral? What to do about the steering ? I assume the steering wheel should be unlocked while towing. It looks like some mechanical connection between the ign. key and steering wheel. Just leave the key on?
  • My Trackor had auto front hubs and had to change to manual hubs, as owners manual says. My Trackor has an auto transmission.
Just put the transfer in N and turn ignition key to the 1st click. Turn off radio! Put on Magnetic lights, plug it in to your plug. Check to make sure your lights are working! Simple and easy!

  • Same as zigzag for our 4WD automatic 1999 Tracker. But best to check your owner's manual under "recreational towing" (behind an RV), which in my manual was different than "emergency towing" (which is when emergency road service comes to tow you).
  • Towed a 95 Tracker, auto trans, 4wd, auto hub locks for about 8 years and 35-40k miles. Put transfer case in neutral, trans in Park, and key in accessory to unlock steering. No Problems.
  • Just checked my Samurai file and the curb weight is 2059 lb, so your tracker should be very close to that.

Motorhome magazine publishes a yearly guide to dingy towing, but is mostly just shows the newest vehicles for each year. However, you can get the older versions for a small fee.

Better check your owners manual. For decades now manufacturers have eliminated the rear pump in auto transmissions which is the reason that 1. can't be push started, and 2. towing can damage the trans due to lack of lubrication. Some are OK if you stop, unhook, and drive around in FWD and REV for 1/4 mile or so, every 200 miles of towing. Better check into this.

I don't claim to be an expert, just passing on info that I get. Hope it helps.

Yes, putting the transfer case in neutral and steering wheel unlocked. Your manual should confirm under emergency towing.
    G42, you loose the bet.

The best way to get the details is the owners manual...if you have it. It has a transfer to put it into neutral so odds are it is okay, but need to know if you have to pull a fuse or anything else.
  • I would be willing to bet the auto trans eliminates towing 4 down, unless you are willing to disconnect the drive shaft.

Put the ignition key in "ACC" position.

CA law specifies you must have a braking system for anything over 1500 lb, and I think your tracker is over that.

Your question would be better served under "Dinghy Towing".
