towing jayco x17Z hybrid with 2015 toyota 4runner rear wheel

Bought a new 4runner to tow x17Z hybrid.Read you need a custom frame mounted hitch since 4runner is cross member mounted and is not recommended to be used with w/d hitch. Is this correct and where do you get this type hitch?

Check your available payload on your 4runner. My DS 2014 4Runner payload is 800lbs.
  • Im not sure what year your camper is but the 2013 Jayco X17Z has a GVWR of 3500 lbs... same as my pop up and I don't need a WDH for my 1997 4Runner V6.
  • My luck wasn't good at all with Curt receivers on my '08 Highlander. First one didn't fit, second one didn't fit, third one broke after 1 year, fourth one broke after 3 years. Using a Draw Tite now.
  • It is correct. If your tongue weight is less than 500lbs just try it with a standard hitch and sway bar. If you need the WD hitch then you should get a frame mounted hitch. The stock hitch is only mounted to the cross member which is not designed to handle the force of WD hitches. It is structural and not easily repairable if bent.

I had to add an aftermarket frame hitch to my old 4Runner. When the latest generation 4Runners came out there was no aftermarket hitch available. It's been a couple of years now so there should be something available now. I had good luck with the Curt brand.
  • Does it state on the hitch not to use a W/D hitch? Is it a Class IV ?
  • Do you really need a WD system with a 17 foot hybrid trailer? The weight limitations should be either in your owners manual or with many brands, stamped on the under side of the receiver. It's possible that you can tow it perfectly well without any WD system.
    Good luck / Skip
