Trade In/Repair Issue

Recently had a blown tire and wheel well damage on my travel trailer. Took it into a dealership with the intention of having it repaired. Initiated a claim on the insurance and while waiting for that to come back, decided to trade the trailer in for a new one and they gave me 2500 for the trailer that was waiting for repairs in the shop. They now have the trailer and title. I have a new 2015 Keystone Cougar.

The question is, since it's now their trailer (no work has been done on it because of the insurance lag) and I signed title over to them, am I still on the hook for repairs? My insurance guy says no and I no longer should have to deal with the shop.

  • Sounds like you are somewhat unsure about what kind of deal you just signed for...

I'd be talking directly to the dealer about this and not us who are just going to give you a bunch of opinions that are not based on the facts and are basically meaningless.
  • I would listen to your insurance guy. He has probably dealt with a similar situation.

Unless you signed something agreeing to repair the damage or give them the insurance check, I don't see it as your problem or responsibility.

I assume the claim is canceled since you no longer own the unit.
  • Did you trade at the shop doing the repair? If not did the place you traded see the trailer? If they did not notice I would say that was there problem. Will the check be made out to you or dealer?
  • Did you sign a contract agreeing to pay for repairs?

As you no longer own it, nor insure it, the insurance company is not going to pay. If no work has been done, the most the shop might charge would be for storage from the time you dropped it off until the dealership bought it, or for parts ordered. That might sound unfair, but sales, service, and body shops at dealerships operate as separate profit centers with separate accounting.

If the body shop bills you for something, I would escalate the question to dealership management.
