Trade In/Repair Issue

What is so complicated? The sales contract should spell it all out.Either the insurance was assigned to the dealership or it was not.

I told the sales manager it's not going to happen and mentioned I'd be running things past a lawyer friend of mine. He got real quiet real fast. Worst case scenario I give them their 2500 back, take back trailer and title and turn them over to the insurance company and get reimbursed for the 2500 that was deducted from the original proceeds. I ran that scenario past my claims guy and he said with some approval from upstairs they could re-open the claim and probably make that happen. Just going to sit and see what they do next.

Talk about brass Heuvos. They pay you salvage value, and might have $2500-3000 in real costs associated with repairing the unit, so they are in it for $5K or so, when they put it on the lot. They sell it for $9K AND want you to give them a check for another $6700. If you were dumb enough to fall for that, it may go down in the business's history as the single most profitable deal they ever did. LOL

I somehow was expecting this, but the dealership called and now wants the insurance settlement money. Told them I have a signed bill of sale for the coach from them for 2500. Long done deal. Insurance company told me to tell them to pound sand.

Just got a check for 35 bucks for the pro rata/unused portion of the cancelled policy as well today! The old coach was insured through May of 2016. That should be the end of the story. I would hope.....

Thanks for reminding me! Been busy raking leaves and getting the new trailer moved into. Bottom line: got a check for 6700 from the insurance company for the loss of the totaled trailer. Got 2500 in trade for the trailer (damaged/as it was) from the dealership. Total compensation for the loss was 9200. Pretty close to high book. Signed a salvage retention agreement at the insurance office. As I notified the dealership early on that it was a total loss situation, they may have to get a salvage title for the coach since they have both the coach and the title, but in Idaho I don't think trailers, campers, motorcycles, and motorhomes are subject to salvage regulations like cars and trucks.

I once traded in a car with hail damage. Insurance would either total it, or give me a slightly less amount and I would keep it and it would NOT be considered totaled. I chose the lesser amount and kept it. Insurance company would have given me less on future repairs with this option, so we decided to trade it. I got an excellent trade value from the dealer as it was. (not sure how I pulled that off) I also got the check from the insurance company for the repairs. I used the trade in value from the dealer AND put the money from the insurance company as a further down payment.

I assume that the camper will work the same way in a sense. Not trying to speculate though. It all depends on what "he said she said."

With that being said, it is probable that the dealer has no interest in the damaged camper. Chances are that the dealer was able to knock off 2500 anyways. He used the trade as a way of making you think they were helping you out of a jam so you were more inclined to buy. Dealers like to play mind games. Either way, if you are happy with the terms, then don't worry about it and enjoy your new rig.

Will see what happens. Worst case scenario is it's done and nothing more will happen. I can live with the 2500 off the new rig.

Your insurance company can't total it now since you are not the owner as they can't take possession of it since it is titled to the dealer. I sure hope your insurance company doesn't pull a fast one and try to total it then you will be hosed out of the $5k+ you thought you might get to fix it. I sure would have had the insurance money in my hand before I took a reduced value in trade. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
