I have them, use them, and have had no issues with them. But there have been some people that have had problems with grease on brakes, and the EZ-Lube system tends to be the fall guy.
I can kind of see the rationale behind not needing them: if the bearings are packed well at assembly then all is well for quite a long time. Especially considering how few miles many trailers travel. But that is the crux of the issue:"if the bearings are packed well at assembly", and many are not. And some have the seal bearing surface damaged during assembly, which results in instant grease leak. And some people may use a power/air grease gun to lube the hubs which is almost guaranteed to cause grease leaks.
And when was the last time you pumped grease into the wheel bearings of your car or truck? And at some point you need to pull wheels/hubs to check brake surfaces, but that needs to be done pretty infrequently. I pulled mine last summer after six years, and all is well. But I'm like most people: I have only put about 18,000 miles in 6 years.
