Sad loss of life that could have been avoided.
Possibly the wife is older than the deceased, and the grandchildren are her biological grandchildren but not his. It's not uncommon to be a grandmother at 40 in KY.
Thanks for that well thought out explanation since my math skills were having a severe problem.
And here is the victim's obit which seems to confirm your thoughts:

Many things are full of air, including people. only then it is HOT AIR. - bikendanExplorer

I'm surprised no one has said they were over the payload rating of the truck and it should have been a dually with 4.56 gears
a man and an infant died and you have to turn it into a jab at the weight police!:(

And for the meteor to melt the hitch and cause the tire to BLOW... picture POSTED SHOWS ---to the left you can clearly see that both tires are full of air and did not blow out.... so your theory is full of holes as it were..:W
Even a blown tire is full of air. It is just not pressurized. :P - TNGW1500SEExplorer

Trailer lock
- JaxDadExplorer III............ or the pin keeping the ball mount in place failed / fell out / was taken by some idiot who thought it would be funny.
It happened to a friend a few years back. When he went in to pay for his fuel some key do at the next fuel island pulled the pin as they were leaving. Luckily the sharp-eyed attendant saw it. Thankfully another customer gave him a pin and he was on his way safely. - rockhillmanorExplorer II

GREAT peace of mind.
Since everybody is speculating, I'll throw in my speculation.
Along the lines of your "HitchitSafe" my guess is the guy forgot or did not put a padlock on. The trailer bounced off the ball and broke free
X10 happens to the best of them.
I had one of my friends who tows cargo trailers everyday for a living.
I had him pick up a truck for me from Montana and bring it back to Chicago on a flat bed trailers.
When we unloaded the car the trailer popped right off the ball! He drove all those miles with it either not locked down correctly or it bounced open, BUT he also did forget to put the lock thru it.
His face went completely white thinking of all what could have happened on the road versus it happening parked in our lot like it did.
So yup it can happen. - NJRVerExplorer
