Triple axle question

Looking into lots of options .

Had two triple axles and no problems with either. Yes, you do get some tire scrubbing in tight turns, but how often do you make tight turns compared to straight down the highway driving.

As for less pin weight than a two axle, pure salesman hype. Manufacturers use 3 axles to distribute the load.

The triple axles have towed great. I have six tires and over sized brake drums, so plenty of stopping power.

Other then the 50% upcharge when replacing tires, there is no real downside to triple axle. 99.99% of trailer tires age out, or fail from damage / under inflation. I can't remember the last time I wore out a set of trailer tires on anything camping related within 5-7 years of getting the tires.
Jackknife the trailer and anything but a single axle will scrub the tires.

The triple axle is no concern really.You just can't do a sharp u-turn and the added expense when it comes time to replace tires. I love how my trip axle pulls.

Generally a 18k GVWR tri axle trailer has less hitch weight than a same length 18k tandem axle trailer...ALL DEPENDING ON AXLE LOCATION.

The tri axle with six brakes is superior over a tandem axle with 4 brakes .... on the same size trailer.

I've found the tri axle tracks much better at highway speeds in high side wind areas or on a narrow winding/twisting highway.

I've found the tri axle trailer don't pound on the truck like a tandem axle trailer can.

Other folks have their own experiences.

Pin weight on a TH will be influenced by what you have (or don't have) in the garage.

It would be great to see what kind of assumptions the maker uses when publishing the dry weights - or better yet, see the owner's manual and what it says about loading the fiver.

Sounds like those pin weights are 'dry' published weights.

Pin weight will be MUCH higher when trailer is loaded up ready to go camping.

Best to look at trailer GVWR and use 20% of that as pin weight figure.
Then if you have actual payload to carry that pin weight figure you will be good to go in the real world

All the XLR models I have been researching have at least 600 pounds less pin weight on the triple vs the double hence why I asked the question.
I am exploring the toy hauler possibility and have a SRW 2012 diesel f350 with 3414 payload.

Triple axle trailers haul great, are very stable and they DO NOT necessarily have higher pin weights just because they are bigger.

The pin weight will depend on where the axles are positioned and how far apart they are thus increasing the amount of trailer weight over the axles. On an Airstream this will be about dead center relieving and nearly balancing the trailer. Some 5th wheels seem to place the axles farther rearward.

A triple axle is typically going to have a heavy pin weight because it's a bigger trailer.

When backing into a sharp turn, the tires slide sideways a bit. The further apart they are the more they are pulled sideways. A tripple axle trailer has the tires further apart. Not the end of the world by any stretch but if you really cut it sharp, you do put some extra stress on them.

Once on the road and cruising along, there should be no problem as you almost never turn sharp enough to be an issue.
