I would have been no free than happy to do a u turn. California aim,t that big a deal. I answered her questions truthfully and completely, I was carrying no fruit no pests. Can the same be said for the other Travelers there with me that got the cursory questions and waved on,? Why was I singled out for special scrutiny?
It boggles my mind that so many of you are so willing to surrender your rights. I spent a 31year career with the federal government having a minimum of a secret clearance and the last 8with a top secret carying segeral endorsements.
I know first hand what a petty government official can do to a citizen,I will not become a victim. If you wish to bow down to an unconstitutional request go for it. I for one will stand on my two feet and demand my government treat me as a citizen, not a subject!
First, if a person carrying fruits, etc., is going to lie, guess what they are going to say? The same exact thing as you said. Just because you know you are being truthful, doesn't mean everyone else knows that. And just because you say you have no fruits in your vehicle doesn't make it true. They have to decide on the spot if they think you are lying or telling the truth. Doesn't matter how many other people they let through without an inspection, they decided you deserved a more thorough check.
I have no problem with folks saying NO to searches - whether they have nothing to hide or not. But at the same time, I don't have a problem with being asked to let them do a search. There is nothing illegal about asking. They ask. You say yes or no, and accept the consequences.
But, you are implying that the inspector singled you out because you are from NY. You have no idea why they singled you out. It could have been because of your attitude, or your hat, or the RV, or you were the 10th in line, or they suspected you of lying. Who knows.
In the end, they did their job - nothing more. You drove away with an attitude that California is out to get you. California couldn't care less about you.
Grow a pair. You are mad because they didn't appear to believe you. You think that is unfair. Yet here you are doing thw exact same thing you accuse them of: assuming a certain behavior instead of giving them the benefit of the doubt. At least their job requires them to make those assumptions. You don't have that excuse.
