- atreisExplorerYou'd also need to taper the back of the trailer. A vacuum forms there, pulling you backward just as strongly as the wind tries to keep you from moving forward.
- TXicemanExplorer IINever saw any difference in towing or fuel economy. The only things I saw were;
Fewer bugs on the trailer and
Lower balance in the checking account.
Ken - GoPackGoExplorerThere is someone on this forum who has mounted one and he claims an improvement. Maybe he will jump in or you might try some word searches to see if you can find him. He has pictures too.
- dodge_guyExplorer IILOL, Old-biscuit, my wife made a similar comment. I kind of agree with you. I`m thinking if I paint it the same color as my truck it may not look so bad. as was said though for $75 it doesn`t hurt to try. even if it only keeps the front of my trailer free of bugs it`ll be worth it!
I only have one trip before Myrtle beach so I will see how it does with that, although that trip will be back roads with a max speed of maybe 55. I know I was getting around 7mpg at 55. so we will see. the only other variable is I got new tires in the stock size and a hwy tread, where as my previous tires where a size larger and a more aggressive off road tire (BFG A/T T/A). I know that I used to get mid 7`s with the OE size and mid to high 6`s with the BFG`s. so we will see.
Yes I was planning on putting it near the back of the X.
I`ll let you know how it does after my first trip. - camp-n-familyExplorerFor the best results, if any, the deflector needs to be mounted as far back on the tv and as close to the trailer as possible otherwise you will get an eddy effect between the truck and trailer making airflow worse.
- Old-BiscuitExplorer IIIPersonally I just couldn't drive around with that goofy wing on top of my truck.....even IF it does move the 'bug line' which is all I think they do.
They just aren't tall enough, wide enough or mounted close enough to front of trailer to do much more. - Campfire_TimeExplorerI used to see a lot of these on station wagons towing trailer back in the '70s and '80s. For $75 it certainly can't hurt to try it. Please give us a report on this after you've used a few trips.
- goducks10ExplorerThat's the goofiest looking hang glider I've seen.:)
- 2500_GruntExplorerI have one and someone suggested that I tie a string to it and watch the air flow as I drive with it installed to determine the best pitch and location. Still haven't done it yet LOL. Cuts down big time on bugs though.
- fj12ryderExplorer IIII think if you could get one mounted that went from the top of the windshield and angled back so it came up to the top leading edge of the 5th wheel you'd be good. That would give you a smooth flow of air from the windshield back.
But that won't happen, what you'll have is air spilling over the top of the wedge and hitting the fifth wheel. It'll move the point where the air flow hits the 5th wheel, but won't do a lot ease your movement through the air.
