Two answers: First downshifting will help you slow down... Up to a point (more on this later) 2WD or 4WD matters not. but Low Gear, Low Range on a 4x4 your max speed is .... Well, let's just say with the engine redlined pedisterians will be passing you.
2WD or 4WD matters not. Downshifting will help slow you down, and you should start down the hill in the same gear you'd use to go back up (one exception, Allison Transmissions with Grade Brake,, you can let the brain do its thing)./
The problem is this: IF you downshift too far, and engine speed gets too high, you may be picking up pistons from alongside the road. (not a good thing at all).. And Low/Low at 50 MPH, I can just about guarentee you'd be doing that.
