Ok and that is the easy part.

Does it put 14.4 volts on the battery when you need a fast charge from the generator?
Does it actually drop to 13.2 volts in a couple days to float the battery giving longer life and lower water use?
Does the WFCO give a periodic boost charge to reduce stratification and provide a little equalization?

The good converters do all this very consistently. WFCO not so much but claim they do.

Sounds exactly like mine...just before I had to replace it. Mine was nearly 9 years old too. No warning, just suddenly no workee.

Maybe it is working.
With very low expectations the WFCO can work for a long time.

My WFCO works just fine too. Because it is turned off and only there as a backup. For general use mine does not operate as specified in the manual but good enough for a backup.

I just got the PowerMax converter and it is the LK model. Thanks for the info.

The Boondocker version has a 3 year warranty from bestconverters, but the regular PowerMax normally has a 2 year warranty.

If you got the newer type with LK in the model name, then you have choice of three stage automatic or else you can set any voltage you like for as long as you like manually. Read the instructions carefully before playing with the switch and pot behind the two holes in the side.

The LK frees you from the fixed three stages you get with most converters when you want to operate that way, or you can use the automatic three stage mode.

The thing is you have described a converter that HAS failed.

When my Progressive Dynamics (Very old) Failed last halloween I was not able to get a new one right away (Did 2 days later) So I got a 100 dollar Deltran Battery Tender PLUS. this is the granddaddy of all battery tenders. not only does it do the 1-2 amp "Tender" stuff but 20 and even 70 amps if needed (20 to charge the battery 70 to help start the car) 24 hours later it dropped into "Tender" mode.. I used it for 2 days till I could run up to Progressive Dynamics and walkinto the Parts/Service dept. A woman said "Can I help you" I pointed to the box I was holding and said "DEAD" she pointed to a pair of french doors and said Through that door.. Inside that room we did the "Can I halp you" and "Dead" bit again and she said "on my desk.

238 dollars later I walked out with a brand new fractory Refurb 9180 (I already had the wizard to plug into it) back to Tekonsha (2 townships away) hook it up and on to OHIO for All Saints day mass at. of all places All Saints Parish (Can you think of a better place???).

Thanks for the good news. I hesitated because the PowerMax was considerably cheaper than the WFCO, but any reviews I could find said that it was a very good unit. It's supposed to be here tomorrow so we'll find out soon...if it gets here like it's scheduled to.

I am convinced that a bad WFCO ruined a pair of my golf cart batteries. My son had a Norcold fridge that would not run because of dirty power from a WFCO--ruined many hundreds of dollars of groceries before we would admit that the WFCO was the problem--hasn't had any problems in years since replacement with Progressive Dynamics. Do not wait--replace the junk now!
