Water Filters

It's no secret that dogs will drink out of a pond or toilet or wherever. But will they drink out of those places if there's clean water right next to them? That's the question. I'm guessing that dogs will always choose the clean water. Whether it's from a Berkey or any other water filter system before they drink toilet or pond water.

There's another RV marketeer (who I will not mention) who does the same Berkey dog endorsement:

"Our dog Lincoln drinks nothing but Berkey water"

Is this part of Berkey's marketing strategy? Yikes

My FW came with a single Flow Pur canister whole house filter system. It is mounted in the basement and plumbed so all water(city or tank)has to pass through. I sanitize in Spring and drink from the tank all camping season. I get my replacement filters from the RVwaterfilterstor.

These type canister filter systems are not expensive, but getting to the plumbing, to make it whole house, may be a bit of a challenge.

This is what have been doing for the past 9 years full time. Both my particulate filter and carbon filter are .5 micron.

On second thought, I'm now considering getting a Berkey water filter system in addition to the in line charcoal type filter.

I posted this account before possibly but.. a few years ago at a campground we like in Michigan, with well water with lots of sediment and with a lot of RV in the park,at times even more dirt. A neighbor in a travel trailer and I were talking as I change our plugged up large 10 in cannister filter. We wash clothes, shower and drink and and use the water to cook that comes through the tap. We do have a second under counter filter to a tap and the ice maker.
The filter was full of dirt. We use a filter with outside media for dirt and a kdf charcoal or with silver water filter.
I showed him the filter and housing. He commented they didn't use a filter, they only used the water to wash dishes, clothes, and shower.
They didn't drink it. I kinda was taken aback. His white t-shirt and shorts were kinda yellow brown. I imagine their shower was too as well as his tan being partly from the water. his water heater and washer too.
Bet he has had to replace the water heater and that none of his faucets seal by now.
I think he was or had just finished washing his truck with dirty water too.
In Michigan a farm state People have a lot of endemic tooth and other problems from all the fertilizer and chemicals used in farming. They leach right through the soil to the high water table wells too.
These days they sell a lot of reverse osmosis water systems and large filter systems and rural Folks enjoy better health for the most part.
A good filter list what contamninents, including chlorine, sediment, chemicals, iron, sulfur, and micro organisms it will filter out.
And a good filter clogs up quicker so you need larger ones and replacement cartridges.
Wife is from the area is how I came to know much of this.

Well I will certainly stay out of Michigan :) I will probably upgrade a bit when we take a summer long trip to Alaska next summer. I don't stay at many RV parks, but I will on that trip. I usually stay at the same parks on my travels, and have had no problems. I do see your point. Thanks

I encourage people to use clear filter housings so you can at least see what's happening.

The "Big Blue" shown below is a 5 micron pleated sediment filter which can be easily washed:

With my park model, I have two filters, 20 micron and 5 micron is series and then it runs through a softener. We drink RO water.
