Water Transfer

Do any of you use a water transfer pump to refill your trailer from water you brought when you go dry while boondocking? I saw a guy using a 5 gallon container and a large funnel. Seems there should be an easier way.
  • Using an older but still working RV water pump is best, but here's another cheap idea.

If you're carrying a drill with you, go to any hdwr store and they'll sell a cheap pump that you power with your drill motor. They're about $11. The pump will have hose fittings on both sides of it. You can buy several feet of cheap clear plastic tubing to fit over the hose fitting. I use this set-up for pumping my RV antifreeze for winterizing.

  • I installed 2 ge whole house filters and a pressure tank. When I plumbed it I installed a halve that lets me pump water into the fresh tank. Instead of going to the house, it diverts to a tee in the hose for my fresh water tank. I use the winterize valve and hose to pump water out of a 5 gallon container and it goes into the fresh tank. I can use a small folding hand cart to move the water jugs and dont have to lift anything.

Open the divert ball valve, switch the pump valve to winterize, stick the hose in the 5 gal jug.
  • I do as Dieseltruckdriver. Before I got the extra sureflo I used an inexpensive bilge pump rigged up with a lamp cord and clamps for power and a short piece of male ended hose clamped to the discharge. I would throw it into a 30 gallon plastic tub and pump away. worked great.
  • There a many easier ways. When I updated the Shurflo in my last RV my friend took the original Shurflo and made a water transfer pump for his Hurricane, which does not have a gravity feed. Just clip it to the battery and pump in the water. Bottled water companies have a hand pump for drawing water from 5 gallon bottles. I keep one in my garage along with our Earthquake supplies. Harbor Freight has a few different fluid pump attachments for drills. Anything is better than lifting a 5 gal jug and pouring it into a funnel. JMHO
  • I had an old 12V RV water pump that I use to pump water from the tank in the back of the truck.
  • I bought a new quieter pump for our 5er, so I use the old pump to transfer water. Plus I have a spare if I would ever need it.
  • I've seen some put the containers on the roof of the truck, park close and have a hose running to the trailer, using gravity to refill it. Could also put it on a ladder I guess. Just as long as its higher.
