Weight causing tires to rub inside of trailer

When my Maverick (utv) is loaded in the garage of my toy hauler its causing the trailer to sag... naturally. But this past weekend I had a blowout and discovered it was because when going around turns on winding roads the extra weight was causing my tires to rub on an aluminum boxed area of the trailer that sits just above and to the inside of the tires. When going straight down the highway all is fine it seems to only rub when weight is shifted side to side. Im well within the cargo capacity of my trailer when loaded so my question is, is there anything I can get to control the sag or help with the side to side weight that will keep the tires from rubbing? I've done a little searching and all I've found is Timbren Trailer enhancements. Has anybody used these? If so is this the answer to my problem or is there something else I should be looking at?

Thanks

  • When trailer is straight and normal how much top and side clearance does the tire have?
  • My previous trailer did this. I notified the dealer and he got me 5 new wheels and tires from the manufacture. This was within the 12 month warranty and the new ones did not rub.
  • Hi jgos929,

Any chance of some pics of your setup? Pics from one side of wheels looking towards the other side to show the springs setup. And then some of the rear of the wheel looking into the inner wheel well so we can see the tire to frame setup.

Sort of need to sort out if the trailer has a setup issue from day one or your suspension is not holding for some reason.

Have you ever weighed the rubbing side of the camper with all the gear in it? Just that side tires on the scale. And what is the GAWR of the axles so we know what weight range league you are in?

    Hope this helps

  • Might check to make sure you don't have too much free play in the wheel hubs.
  • My fiver does the same thing... rubbing on the inside sidewall, not the tread area as others have interpreted your post. It is only on corners, but we do drive some windy 2-lane roads.

I've been monitoring the tires and I made sure there weren't any sharp edges on the inside of the wheelwell. So far, so good. The sidewalls only show that they've been rubbing but no material is missing nor are there any cuts.

I'll monitor this thread to see if someone posts a solution.

  • Do the fully loaded springs have a good arc to them? Get us a pic.

Note the ride height from wheel to frame.
  • You might want to check your tires to see if you have had belt separation... It can cause the tire to bulge at the middle of the tread enough that the tire(s) will rub. Your tires should be flat across the tread, if they are rounded then you have belt separation and this will cause a blowout or tread separation.

I had two tires bulge by over an inch on my previous set.
  • An axle flip comes to mind. The toy hauler forum will be some help. Good luck.
