The problem these days, is that people actually like that sort of thing instead of it being punishment...
I don't want to fall into a religious war, but I do agree with the above -- with the lack of any moral teaching in the schools (regardless of deity be it God, Allah, or others), we see people choosing another god... and that is materialism and the almighty dollar, which shows in their manners.
Parents are partially to blame as well. At the minimum, the kids need to be limited in TV viewing so the biggest influence in their lives are not Hollywood celebs in rehab yet again, or advertisers demanding they push their parents to buy more new products.
