What has happend to manners and respectful of others

My father did not take a super active role in raising us,but he was an ever present omnipotent figure in our home. He had standards that he demanded, and # on that list was, "you do not embarrass the family.you only have one name and you will not sully it!"

This is the way it was in my family. My kids not so much, their mother was from a very permissive background.
