Where is your portable generator when you travel

I have been reading numerous posting about people using portable generators and the placement while in use. Most seem to either put them under a slide out, to keep rain off or in the back of the pickup. I have 2 options in the pickup or on a carrier on the receiver hitch on the back of the fifth wheel.
My question, if using in the back of the pickup with a fifth wheel bedroom directly over the gen. isn't there a strong possibility of getting exhaust fumes up in the sleeping area? I have posted this on another forum also, would like to get a idea what people do with their generators.
Just curious

  • You people need to go back and read what I asked. I was more concerned with your safety. fumes rise upward unless the wind is blowing, I was wondering if there was a strong possibility of getting fumes in the rv. I have never even carried my generator with us. much less used it for the rv. We have for 40 yrs used nothing but FHU rv parks. You can sleep tonight, the generator will not be on.
  • When traveling my little Honda is stored in the garage storage area in the from of my 5ver. When using my Honda I always keep it under either a slideout or under the front of the 5ver. And I always have a security cable and lock on it. We never run the Honda at night when we've boondocked as it doesn't run the AC and the battery is already charged from an hour of running during the daytime.

My 2KW Generator sits secured in the tailgate corner of my covered and lockable FOLD-A-COVER bed cover.

We only run our generator at the public campgrounds usually at 8AM each morning using the trailer shore power cable with an RV30A-15A Adapter to power up the OFF-ROAD trailer converter/charger unit to charge our battery bank back up to its 90% charge state each day.

Everything we want to use is run from our 600WATT Inverter or direct connected to the 255AH battery bank..

Usually where we camp without electric hookups on the East side of the US and Eastern Natl Forest areas do not allow the use of the generator except during generator run time hours. Never allowed after 8PM at night.

We live just fine in the OFF-ROAD camp grounds without the use of Air Conditioning.

  • In the pickup bed while transporting.

Usually do not run it at night. It goes off when we go to bed. I think the only time we ran it at night was when it was really cold and our batteries were old and starting to fail. We knew the batteries were not going to keep the furnace going all night, so I let the gen run.

If we are in a regular campground and it is snowing/raining, I put it under the picnic table. Even though the Honda gens are quite capable of running in the rain I try to keep it out of a direct downpour.
  • When we travel the genny is either inside the truck or in the trailer bottom storage bin.
  • If the weather is bad I put it either under the awning or under the slide. I have a Co detector for safety but it has never alarmed.
  • I run my generator all the time when camping in the winter. I made a little "roof" for it that is held in place by wedging it between the bumper and the bottom of the trailer. I point the exhaust from my generator towards the woods - away from the camper. I have a Honda EU2000i and a marine tank that I rigged as an extended run tank.
