Just be aware that WiFi can be hacked. I did extensive research on it some years ago. If you have NO sensitive material on your computer or cel phone you can feel relatively safe.
Keep your passwords on paper. Don't have SSN, birthdays, account numbers, etc. on the device.
Wired internet from someone you don't trust (like a campground) can be just as easily hacked...perhaps more so. Even with a network you think you trust, the data goes through many intermediary networks to get to its destination, and any one of those could be compromised.
The best plan IMHO is to not worry too much about connecting to "bad" networks, but to make sure that your connection to important things like your bank is properly secured (e.g. https rather than http, and in most browsers with a padlock icon showing) and to be sure not to accept any root certificates or other software that connecting to a network attempts to get you to install.
If your device is properly secured, the data on it is not available to others via a network interface unless you make it available. If it is, it matters not whether it's an insecure wifi network or just an ordinary network connected to the internet, as hackers and other bad actors can and do attempt to make network connections to any internet host.
