Wiring one air conditioner to use 20 amp outlet

I have a 1997 Winnebago Itasca Suncruiser with a 5k Onan generator. The RV has one 30 amp plug. However, both air conditioners will only work at the same time if the generator is running. I would like to be able to run both generators off of my RV park electric outlet which has a 30 and a 20 amp outlet. I read once that one could rewire the unit to be able to run one air conditioner off the 30 amp outlet side and the other by adding a separate 15/20 amp cord and plug off the unit which could then be plugged into the park 20 amp outlet. It was wired in a way that the generator would still run both air conditioners at the same time. Anyone?

  • Your best bet is to go to the Winnebago website and download the wiring diagram for your RV. You probably have a front/rear A/C switch some where in the coach to switch between the two A/Cs while on 30amp power. So you have to wire up the separate 20amp power so it does not cross feed the 30 amp power. You probably have to have the switch set to the front A/C if using the generator wiring.
  • The simplest way is to go to the first junction box out of the genset, determine which set of leads power the rear air, and install a pigtail with male and female connectors on them- leave them plugged together for genset power, plug it in to a cord for shore power.
This does mean you are relying on the park breaker for circuit protection, and there is a kit out there that includes a breaker (someone will come up with the name).
