11.9 liter cummins dip stick problem.

I recently changed the oil in my 11.9 L Cummins in a 2014 Zephyr. After adding 44 quarts of oil the oil level just barely touches the bottom of the add oil level on the dipstick. It would probably take about another gallon to bring it up to the top. But Cummins tells me it only needs 44 quarts. I talked to Spartan and they told me that it had the correct dipstick in it and to run it like it is. has anyone else had this problem?
  • I just found out from Cummings that this engine holds 48 quarts with the filter changed and not 44 like I was originally told so that makes a big difference
  • Does your unit have an auxiliary Luber-Finer bypass filter on it? If yes, is it a C500L or C750L?

Unless your 855 has a different oil pan 44-quarts was in vogue in the 1960's. I had to modify the stipdick on Quicksilver. I had to add 2-inches because the new tube had to bend around the aftercooler. I used 20 gauge 18-8 stainless steel shined to a mirror with simichrome. Marks on BOTH sides. Did four marks in 2 liter increments.

I called Spartan and yes they did add the dipstick to this engine. I checked with Cummins and 44 quarts is the correct amount with a filter change. All that I can come up with is this dipstick is out of calibration. This happened on my last motorhome with a cat C7 engine. You wouldn't think a dipstick would be that hard to make the right way

  • Confirm total oil quantity with filter change for your engine serial number with Cummins.

THEN, calibrate you engine's oil dipstick. Remember, this was not supplied by Cummins, as it would have been too short for a DP application. The dip stick is most likely the thing that is out of sync with your engine/oil quantity.

Calibrating is FREE at next oil change.
  • With a filter change you are supposed to add a total of 44 quarts and yes I changed the filter. I waited more than 15 minutes before I check the oil level actually it was the same thing when I let it sit overnight
  • 2 things come to mind

    1) did you change oil filter........YES add another quart of oil

    2) did you wait 15 mins or more and THEN check oil level?
Can take a while before oil drains down and registers on dip stick
