2004 6 liter ford problem

In Kingman, AZ at Ford Dealership with a broken injector. Started up an incline outside Kingman when smoke poured from the engine. Ford said the tip of one of the injectors had broken off. They pull the injector and inspected the cylinder wall with no apparent damage. Anyone had a problem similar to this with their 6.0 PS?
  • Bought the truck new, and has 110,000 highway miles on it. Been a good truck until now.

    Just curious.
Did you buy this truck new or used and how many miles are on it?

I have to agree with your position of if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Especially given the price of a set of injectors.

As to metal shavings left in the cylinder. If the shop believes the cylinder to be debris free ask them to make that statement on the invoice.
  • At about 5200 hours and 148k on the truck I had my number 2 injector pintle stick wide open. The tip was still there just wedged inside the injector. I replaced the whole left bank at that point.
  • In response to Kirby, I haven't had any problems until now, so I take the position that if it's not broke, don't fix it. Probably not a good thing to do with these engines and their problems.
  • Just the basic gauges on the XLT Cab. Got to talk w/mechanic again today before actually installing a new injector. As I understand, it probably will be ok, but my concern is whether or not some of the metal shavings might still be in there. When the engine is restarted, then the rings might cause the scoring, and thus that cylinder is gone along with the engine. This is based on my experience with engine rebuilding etc. In any event, I suppose it will be a trial without the error I hope. Can you direct me to some info you might have read on these types of problems?
  • Have you installed the fuel pressure regulator blue spring upgrade ? This increase in pressure is supposed to add longer life to the injectors.
  • Injectors are one of the known problem areas in the 6.0, especially in the early production years (03, 04). Sounds like you got away pretty lucky, especially if you've never had problems before. Do you run a gauge to help you keep an eye on temps, etc.?
