2006 E450 V10 idling rough and stalling

I took it for a ride about 2 weeks ago and everything seemed OK. Tried to start it up yesterday, and it wouldn't stay running. Seemed like air or fuel was being restricted. Checked air filter and it was a mess. Mice had built a nest in it. Cleaned out the nest and replaced the air filter, and it is running a little better, but still not running right. Checked the entire engine compartment to see if there were any other signs of rodent damage, but didn't see anything. Anybody got any suggestions? I'm not sure if I could even keep it running long enough to get it to a mechanic, as it keeps stalling. I would really like to try some home fixes, before calling a tow truck. Thanks!

With a V10, you can replace the fuel filter as part of your problem elimination process. It's inside the driver side frame rail, under the cab. You need a filter, part number shared with some of the Ranger trucks, and a 5/16" disconnect tool. Here's a thread about it.
There's a Fuel Pressure Test Fitting in the engine compartment. Near the transmission dipstick, Green Cap on it. If you change the filter and it doesn't have pressure there, two prime causes are:
    1. Failed Pressure Regulator
    2. Failed In-Tank High Pressure Fuel Pump
I hear of far more Pumps replaced than Regulators.
  • Is this a 6.0 diesel? If so ...
I wonder if you got the whole nest out? Check again.
Have you checked the codes? I use Torque Pro to check mine.
Water/condensation in the fuel? Try a new fuel filter.
Has the EGR valve been cleaned? Might be stuck-clean it.
How is the battery voltage? Low voltage can blow the FICM-not a good thing.
