2014 Keystone Laredo Slide out will not open!

We just purchased our first travel trailer a week ago from an out of state dealer. Brought it home, had both slide outs open and closed all week with no problems at all. Took the trailer to the RV park this morning where it will stay for at least a year so that my husband doesn't have to travel 3 hours 1 way for his job. We leveled it and opened one slide perfectly fine. The other one that has the stove & fridge in it would only open about a 1/4 of an inch and started clicking and making a loud noise. We brought it back in and tried it again with the same results. We checked to make sure nothing was in the way etc. We even moved the trailer over a little and re-leveled it. Tried it again same thing. We then tried to open it manually with the crank and it still would not go out.

Because it was Saturday afternoon, the techs in the service department at the dealer were gone and our sales person told us a few things to check which we did with no luck.

I was just wondering if any of you experts out there have had this issue and if you have any suggestions? The mechanism for the slide is a cable on the top of the slide out. Any information is greatly appreciated.

My husband has had travel trailers before but never one that had a slide out.

Thank you,

Lori

  • I don't know which model Laredo you have, but some of them have the fabricated "I-beam" frame. I find that this type of Lippert frame construction is very weak. Before the mechanic works on it, sight down the main frame rails and see if there is any bow in it, side to side and up and down.
  • Thanks everyone for your response. Yes, we were hooked up to power and also the batteries were fully charged. The one big slide out works perfectly. It is the one with the fridge and stove in it. We are waiting for the service department to call us back in the morning. They said they will work with us in getting it fixed. No, we definately aren't going to mess with anything that is for sure. We had a tech on the phone with us from the dealership yesterday and he had us check some things and try to use the manual crank and it didnt work. It wouldn't be so bad if it was the slide with the fridge. We can't open it because the island is right there LOL... Oh well, I guess it is a good time to lose weight. Thanks again!! I hope you all have a wonderful day.
  • Were you plugged into mains power?
If you were only on battery, perhaps your battery is weak and needs to be charged.
  • probably a defective motor if you cant take it out manually. You could take motor off and see if you then could take it out manually if you are camping and need the slide out. Just remember what you do and put it make exactly that way before you take it to dealer for warranty work. Besides, honestly a dealer wouldnt care if you tried to do it yourself. The warranty company pays them to fix it. They want the work.
  • X2 on not trying to fix that problem yourself given that the trailer is under warranty. That would not be a quick easy fix particularly if you are not familiar with the mechanics of the slide unit. I am sure you could find an authorized service center closer to your current location. Given it's near the end of the season, they may be able to get you in fairly quick.
  • Ouch... brand new trailer.... 3 hrs away from the dealer... and not working. I wonder, is there a dealer in the area where the trailer is now that could do warranty work for you? I'm not sure, but if you try to fix things yourself first, and bugger something up, the warranty work could be invalidated. Slides, at least in a motorhome and I assume in a trailer, are complex to get working properly - best to let the factory service center do them.

Anyway, that is my 2-cents. Lets see what others think!
