VicT, have you checked the carb drain plug as the source of your leak? I remember a few posters saying that theirs was loose upon delivery, hence the gas leak. So many so that the professor noted it as a common problem.
As for the oil thing, it sounds to me like your gen was transported (at one time during delivery) upside down. I know this would take a little time, but try running the thing longer (a few hours at least) to see if the smoke clears up. Worst thing that could happen is you'll foul the plug. They're not that expensive. You could also see if the crankcase oil level drops as the blue smoke continues. If it is buring that much oil, it would eventually drop the level in the crankcase. Oil level drops - trouble. Oil level doesn't drop - it may be burning oil that got into the upper parts of the engine when it was upside down. It should then burn off and clear up. You'd be surprised at how little oil will make a whole lotta blue smoke.
Just a guess, but worth a try.
