On another note, I checked the noise level with a friend's meter and found it to be 74dB at 7m. Anyone else finding this?
How is your friend's meter weighted? There are two scales used to measure sound levels. For the generators, we normally use the weighting. The scale is closer to the frequencies that the human ear is sensitive to and is more accurate for sound measurements effecting us.
Virtually all of my measurements with the ELM and Champion have been made in an open field with the generator in the center (no reflective mass close by). In a 360 degree pattern, sound levels have not exceeded published levels.
Now, if I set the genny on the back carrier of the camper where there is a solid wall behind it and park it in the driveway so that the end of our house is about 20 feet away and my truck is parked parallel about 10 feet away, sound levels will be closer to 70 - 72 dB[A} due to reflections.
The best way to assure these units produce the minimum possible sound is to place them in locations, like next to bushes or soft material, that will absorb rather than reflect sound. Just setting them on a grassy surface helps considerably. As one forum member recently noted, just placing a sound absorbing material like a painter's drop cloth a few inches away from the engine shroud side can reduce noise by 2-3 dB.
Experiment with location and nearby sound absorbing objects, you will be pleased with the difference it can make.
