My interpretation of what the prof is saying is that generators with the same sound level reading may actually sound different to a human. Although they register the same on the dB(A) scale, the overall characteristics of the sound from one generator might be more annoying than those of a different one. That might (or might not, depending on your needs and the amount of money you have lying around) justify spending more money on a generator with what appears to be a similar sound rating.
