Seems this thread will go on forever and there's no way I can read every post now, so if this question has been asked many times before, please bear with me one more time.
Has anyone installed one of these gen sets under discussion to replace the one that came with your motor coach and what did it entail. Pros and cons of doing so are most welcome also.
I'm getting ready to repair my 5.5 Generac again and the thought has crossed my mind if and when it might be to my advantage to replace.
Some have done it. Myself included. But, it is not an easy swap and requires numerous modifications. It is not a plug-and-play operation. If you want to investigate what is needed you will need to read about a year's worth of postings going back from today to get a idea of the process. Way too much info to redo in condensed book form. Also look at the "My $500 almost silent...." thread Brad wrote up for his fifth wheel.
The simplest working swap method is what Mr. Wizard did - a slide out tray that the generator sits on. This puts the genny away when not in use and out in the open for cooling when needed.
Thanks professor and I think you've answered my question already.
Now here's the ringer. It seems that Onan with it's particular 5.5 size has been matched by Generac for a direct replacement at a much better price. This size is much larger than my vintage 98 model which is already compact enough so it looks like I will continue to repair my unit as needed.
