I really like or want to like the Champ but I think they were stretching it with their liberal Watt rating. Mines 3500/ 4000 and 2 1500 watt appliances (heater and heat gun) tortures it. But to be fair, I'm in Colorado at 6000' +
I believe you are right that the Watt rating is overstated. The Onan Homesite Generator rated output is 2000/2200 watts with the same size engine. But of course, Onan could be understating the output.
A realistic output is probably around 2500 watts. I used to know the formula to calculate a realistic output, but old age made its appearance, and I can't recall it and don't feel like looking it up. Exceeding 2500 watts on a regular basis can't be good for the longevity of the unit.
The world is full of advertising claims that are "shaky" at best. While the Champion "may" indeed put out a solid 25 amps to a resistive load it is NOT, IMHO, nor has ever been a 100% duty cycle 3,500 watt generator - nor have others using the 200 cc GX clone engine. I have always stated that you have a dependable 2,800 watt generator. Anything over that is intermittent and sustained operation at higher loads will drastically shorten the life of your machine.
