Hi, I'm having a problem with my Champ that I don't have any idea where to look to figure it out. I've been in the process of replaceing the roof on the RV so I haven't been running it as often as I should have and that MAY be the cause. It's a model C46540 RV ready. What is happening is that when it starts, I only get about 30 volts per its meter. Sometimes, if I shut it off and restart it, it goes back to 120 volts, sometimes it doesn't. Once, I went ahead and plugged in the coffee pot, when it was reading 30 V., it shuddered and suddenly went to 120v. as it should, sometimes not. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. Anyone have any ideas as to what's happening? Thanks.
Hey Jerry,
Good luck on the roof! Sounds like quite a project.
Since you ask for advice.......... Well, the first thing is to call Champion at the 800 number on the generator. I "suspect" you will get one of two, if not both of these answers.
First is the impending failure of an AVR, brush set or DC diode.
The other is the need to re-polarize the field, which is not uncommon on a generator of this type that does not depend upon strong permanent magnetic fields. This is the link to the Tech Bulletins on the problem.
Please let us know the result.
