I purchased this Powermax 4400/3500 gen set a few years ago to keep at home for emergencies and whenever needed. I stumbled onto this thread and was intrigued by the interest and discussions on these size generators. I have not read all of them, just the more recent ones. I was wondering how this model compares to the Champions and others and if anyone has any experiences with the Powermax generators. It has the 6.5 hp engine. It does not have the 30 amp RV plug in. I may use this one for my TT sometime when dry camping and charging batteries is necessary and noise is not a problem. -Lee
I'm not sure who builds the PowerMax but suspect it might be Jiang Dong, one of the largest small engine builders in China.
The question is not how good it is, but what kind of support you have if problems occur and you need parts. The engines are pretty much the same, the innards of the generator can vary considerably. Thus, geting engine parts from another company, such as Champion, is possible. But getting parts for the alternator is a different story as they are not generally interchangeable.
John Austin and I did discover a Champion AVR would work on his DuroPower even though they look entirely different. That is most likely the extent of interchangeably of alternator parts.
Well after digging around a bit I found out this generator is still being made, under a new name- "Duromax". It is sold by Maxtools online and is still being sold on Ebay, where I purchased mine. Parts are available through them. I had assumed and hoped that all these Chinese gensets were made by the same company with different badges on them so parts would be interchangeable and easily obtained, but I see from this thread that is not the case.
This generator is also rated 4400 surge/3500 constant with the same engine as the others. I have to wonder if it really puts out this much juice. I will say it always starts right up and has performed when needed. I guess I have to spend a few bucks for the RV adapter now.
