There is a lot of advertising associated with cleaning power and octane that is specifically designed to make you purchase the more expensive fuel. Shell claims that their premium high octane V-Power fuels contain a special nitrogen enriched formula with 4X the cleaning power of EPA minimums and even state that it is higher than their "regular" fuels. One must realize that this is largely targeted to increasing sales and profits.
You can read all about it on Shell's Web Site.
But, note there is one important statement made by Shell that all small engine owners should pay attention to:
Small, carburetored, low compression air cooled engines are NOT the same design as today's computer controlled fuel injected automotive engines that can adjust ignition timing and air/fuel mixtures under various operating conditions or to different fuels via an oxygen sensor's signal.
In spite of Shell's hunger for higher profits by compelling motorists to purchase their most expensive fuels, they stop short of recommending their premium fuel for these engines over manufacturer's recommendations.
The only small engines I have ever had a deposit build-up problem with were worn-out oil pumpers that needed new rings and a valve job.

Is Shell V-Power suitable for motorbikes or snowmobiles?
Yes, Shell V-Power is suited for all gasoline-powered engines. However, we recommend that customers check the owner’s manuals of those engines and use the recommended octane grade.
