I will readily admit that it is outside my realm of knowledge, but everything that I have heard about "small engines" is that they do not have the same anti-knock fuel requirements and thus are not as picky about octane rating as the larger engines.
I fly model airplanes, some of which are gasoline-ignition engines (my largest is a 160cc 2 cylinder 2 stroke). I try to use whatever the manufacturer recommends, which is usually 87 - 89 octane gasoline. However, I have used 100LL aviation fuel on one occasion and did not notice any ill effects (carbon build up or plug discoloration). There are guys that use Coleman lantern fuel, since they don't like the smell of gasoline while running or transporting or storing their planes. The 100LL aviation fuel also does not smell as bad (one reason I tried it). I've had someone tell me that aviation fuel does not go bad as quickly, but I don't know that for sure.
One thing for sure, the gasoline model engines do NOT have the problems with corrosion and rusted bearings that the alcohol based glow-fuel engines have. If I could buy non ethanol enhanced gasoline, I would.
