with a generator that is operating properly, shutting down with a load, causes a strain on the AVR ( voltage regulator ) as it tries to compensate for the dropping voltage
if the killavolt needs to do its job, its because the avr has already failed, that is why the voltage is too high, the Kill A Volt would be shutting down the genny to PREVENT the damage that over voltage would cause, like burned out motors in the A/C or burned out components in a MW etc..
