First, thanks to both you fellows for your interest to bring us a link to what UL has to say.
Sometimes I get PO'ed with posts from the folks of higher learning when they give us answers to questions like 'why don't the portable gens have UL approval'? Like, not every one is going to hire a back- hoe digger to place a 8' copper rod in the ground for use with the portable gen. And the ground (earth) better be of proper moisture content too. So here's the deal. Prof' states, be sure and use the GFCI with the Portable gen. Okay on that one. Should have floating neutral in the gen. Okay one that one. Now, Prof' always throws in the common sense rules, that can be all over the place and hits me where it hurts. Okay, he is the Professor. My own rule would be to never operate the portable gen outdoors if any chance of bad weather. Period. Prof, says, I worry to much. Anyway, My Champion is now in the very dry genhouse with an extention on the exhaust to the outside.
As for the Onan gen in my MH, I worry about the use if it also. I chalk up that worry to not having the 'EE' to place behind my name.
If I were to ever use a portable type gen again for RV use, it would be installed on a slide like 'the Wiz' had on a previous MH. They can easily be constructed using Heavy Duty slides from Home depot for use in most all RV's. Pull 'em out for use, in for storage and travel. But, I would continue to be uneasy not having a real grounded ground or neutral. That's just me the novice, nothing to do with UL or OSHA. Maybe the use of the portable gen in the back of a pick-up might be okay, don't know for sure.

PA: The power strips in use in the stick house and MH with that UL logo, they worry me too! Might burn down the barn. For those younger folks who like to worry 'bout stuff, I've got it on ya, 78 and counting.
