Years ago a lot of the old 2 way technicians used to tie a couple of knots in the A/C power cord because they believed it cut down on lightning damage thru the power line.
I remember hearing something about that myself... wonder how they tested it?... :E
Hope "we" didn't hijack the thread - but the lightning info does get around to - "unplug and use the generator if needed".

One of the often referenced lightning articles is by John De Armond from 1999. It covers RVs - with a lot of gee whiz information.
The coils (about 5-6 paragraphs down):
"One of the simplest and yet most effective means of diverting lightning energy is to put a loop or two in all leads entering or leaving the equipment building."
Another paragraph or two down:
"All that said, the easiest way to protect an RV is to simply unplug it when a storm approaches."
And the paragraph *after* that deals with a memo from Motorola about *disconnecting* grounds for sensitive equipment - and the results.
(Should bring back fond memories -for the Prof- of the great grounding discussion/s here, LOL!)
