I did a little remodeling in the lower passenger faring space on our Volvo VNL670 yesterday.
Previously, I had a small 2000i generator mounted where you now see the tan container in the photo.
I have removed the small generator and replaced it with a Champion 46538.
Now, what is really nice is I no longer have to get out, open the faring and pull a rope to start the generator. I can simply press the remote control key fob as I get out of the truck and the generator starts like magic!
Since I frequently use the generator to power a 120 VAC air conditioner when the engine is not running this makes life simpler. With the generator and A/C I can leave our pet in the truck without worry about heat.
Another problem I was having with the smaller generator was I could not run the A/C and the converter/charger at the same time. I had to flip the circuit breaker for the converter off. No more - the 46538 powers everything with ease.
Now, this is the interesting part. From a few feet away the 46538 sounds no louder than the Kipor KGE2000i inverter it replaced. The Kipor had to run at top speed for the A/C, which negated the low sound level that inverters are recognized for. The truck's fairing, fuel tanks and undercarriage help to dampen sound much like a custom enclosure but without the need for fans to boost cooling.
I still need to upgrade my wiring from the generator to the transfer switch to #10 wiring and finish the construction of the tail pipe from the muffler to the back of the tractor cab. I'll do that this coming week.
This also gives me a back-up genny for the fiver should something malfunction in the 40008 in the "cave" - or a power source further removed from the fiver for less noise and vibration inside.
