Been awhile since I've checked in here & I'm happy to see this thread still alive & well :)
I did some measurements many years ago on my now-gone Wen Power Pro 3500. At 21 feet with the genny sitting on grass in the middle of my large yard (no boundary reflections) the exhaust end produced 67dBA on a calibrated Bruel & Kjaer digital spl meter and 70dBA at the recoil starter end. The frequency output was viewed on a 1/2 octave analyzer and the clatter from the recoil mechanism was the dominant factor & was way up in the middle audible frequencies. I'm sure the mfr. takes the best reading & publishes only that number.
I replaced that Wen with my Champion because of the full power single outlet and TT receptacle. Power output & sound were the same.
Just another datapoint--happy it agrees with the Prof. :)
