Have you run the measurements with the genny sitting longways to the fiver? This would point the muffler exhaust toward the truck cab (away from the fiver), give you access to the front panel and if you "flip" the recoil starter 180 degrees on the housing you will have a good down pull on the choke side to start.
Just brainstorming a little.......
Northern Virginia? Can't be too far from Richmond.

I'm definately not the most creative, so I'm sure there are better ways to do it. I got lucky and my first attempt seems to work well. I can easily start the genny while I'm standing beside the truck. Keep us updated with pics if you can. I may be able to steal some of your ideas to improve on my setup.
I ran it today at a truck stop so my dogs could have AC while I went into the McDonalds for lunch. They were happy to stay cool while we rested a bit and ate a bite.
Professor.. I shalll re-measure to see if the sideways will work. My concern is the toolbox/aux tank several inches infront of the hitch, must be sure that when the rig flexes (truck rear axle low) that the genny doesn't kiss the tool box.
And we are close enough to Richmond for all of our $$$ to go there but too far away for any to come back. Fairfax City, stones throw from I-66.
Doctor.. Yours works.. what can be wrong with it.
Here is a link to a genny wiring idea..
