I had a similar issue and after chasing gremlins and ghosts I went back to the carb and cleaned it again. This time I paid particular attention to the carb jets using pipe cleaners to ream out the ports. Walla, it ran smooth and without using the choke. If you're lucky .....
When I cleaned the carb I didn't remove the main jet. I'll do as you said and give it a try. Is there and source for main jets?
