I won't sign on to some of the consensus. The result every time I've compared specs is that at full power, efficiency is about equal, and at less than full power the inverter generator wins.
While respectively efficient, there's no denying that the inverter alone eats power. As most here already know, to compensate for the inverter losses, they lower the engine RPM during low/no loads to lower fuel consumption. Problem is, many MH owners now are using inverter gensets to accommodate high amp loads - more often than not, continuously. If all you do is power low amp devices and an occasional high surge, then yes, the inverter genset can be slightly more fuel efficient. But I don't expect you to take my work for it....
