30amp breaker triggered

Yesterday, I had the ac, electric water heater, and rice cooker going and it kept triggering the 30amp breaker outside. I went to the gas water heater and everything was ok.

today, at a different campground, I had the ac and electric water heater and it triggered the 30amp breaker again so I went back to the gas water heater and so far so good.

Is the electric water heater and 15,000 btu AC too much for 30 amps???

Sounds normal and the circuit breaker did it's job.

    Yup X2!

When you have the ac on in an RV.....micro's, appliances, etc can not be plugged in at the same time. Even with the AC off, you can not plug in 2 appliances that draw a lot of amps. You only have 30 anything over that in combinations trips the breaker.

They can be plugged in, you just can't use them all at once.
It's been my experience that on 30A you can run two major items at once.

Just went through this on a recent state park visit. The 30A breaker will hold with Converter plus Fridge plus 15K A/C and one more "major" appliance (except the water heater). Also, only one shore tie connection! By that I mean park close enough to the Pedestal to plug the coach's cable directly into it. No adapters, no extension cords, even the "RV" type.
We have a Suburban DSI/Electric water heater. I find enough water is hot enough to do dishes with about 5 minutes of run time on LPG. Used that way, LPG use is not an issue.

  • WH is probably around 1200 to 1500 watts.
AC unit is probably around 900 to 1200 watts.
Rice cooker? I don't know but probably around 1000 to 1500 watts.
Converter would be pulling maybe 100 or 200.
Refrigerator would be pulling around 100 to 200 also.

    A 30 amp service is only good for 30A x 120v = 3,600 watts.
  • I'm curious, is it the breaker in your RV that's tripping or the one on the pedestal?
Breakers can get weak with age and use, especially if they're operated at their limits often like the way they do with our 30A RV's.
  • Way too much at 120 volts. If the voltage is lower then the amperage would be even higher.
Remember you also have load from your converter.

When using AC and another high draw item (like a rice cooker or blow dryer) I turn the water heater and refrigerator both to propane or off totally. The converter needs to stay on under most situations.

It took me a while to convince DW of the need. Finally, after making her go turn the breaker back on herself, she got the message.
  • WAY TOO BIG A LOAD. I'll bet you are pushing it with just A/C plus cooker. Note your converter draws current as well, sneaky little thing.
  • Yes, especially if the voltage is sagging, which is common when everyone is running a/c.

Better check your plug for overheating/melting.
