50A male plug wiring
I am replacing the male end of the plug. Does it matter which post red and black are on i.e. does it have to be the same on the male and female plug as long as ground and neutral are correct?

- I made a mistake. I was thinking of the opposite adapter. 50 to 30.

Most of us call that a dog bone adapter.
A pig tail has a plug--and bare wires on the other end to connect to an outlet, or a distribution center. That is why there were so many (passionate) responses.
My limited understanding is that a 50 amp RV should attempt to balance the load so that each leg has about the same wattage.Dufus wrote:

OP, hots are interchangable.

NO, that is not correct.
As stated above a male 30 to female 50 adapter connects the ONE hot on the 30 amp end to BOTH hots on the 50 amp end.
Very simple test with ohm meter. Stick one probe in male hot and the other probe in either of the outer straights on the 50 amp end. CONTINUITY.
Yes, you are substantially more limited in what you can run:
50 amp= 2 50 amp hots @120 VDC
30 amp= 30 amps @ 120 VAC
But all circuits in the 50 amp RV do have power (until you turn on too much and kick the 30 amp breaker).- The 30amp is wired to one side of the hots, not both.
