- mena661ExplorerThanks all. I should've kept up with the thread. I ended up getting another PD 50A due to some unforseen time constraints. Just got it installed about an hour ago with the help of my BIL.
- BFL13Explorer IINo idea what makes one better than another, but here is one for $108
http://www.boatandrvaccessories.com/products/powermax-pmts-50-50-amp-transfer-switch - MEXICOWANDERERExplorerThat's why mercury filled relays were so popular. Upon full load contact BREAK there is zero arcing. My Trace is protected with a DPDT mercury relay. The relay laughs at a 50 ampere loaded contact break. The original Trace 60 amp relay went bye-bye around 2002.
- pianotunaNomad IIICA Traveller,
The 60 Amp fuse is OEM and is 12 volt for charging the house batteries. I upgraded to a 2nd #8 charging path and both are protected by 50 amp automatic reset breakers. The most I ever "saw" being used was 77 amps--but occasionally I'd get no reading on the 100 amp meter.
I do have manual control over the relays.
I do know the Magnum 3012 hybrid inverter charger comes with a transfer switch rated at 60 amps. It has a time delay on connection while it does voodoo of some sort. It often "clicks" once and then allows connection on the second attempt to hook up to shore power. - CA_TravelerExplorer III

Wow! Pulling over 60A on one of the hot leads and then switching. No wonder they burn up.
Hi CA Traveler,
Because the OEM relay had burned contacts within 12 months of my first use. Because the circuit also blew three sixty amp fuses. I replaced the fuse with a 50 amp automatic circuit breaker. It has been fine ever since.

Why so much higher than 50A?
I'd upgrade to one that is rated for at least 100 amps. Mine are 200 amps.
You make me wonder - You have 60A fuses on a 50A A/C pedestal? Doesn't your 50A rig CB trip? I must be missing something since 50A requires a dual CB so that both hot leads will disconnect when either exceeds 50A.
I NEVER switch the AC with high current loads like A/Cs and HW. Mostly all AC sources are off except the refer and charger and since the batteries are generally charged they represent only a few amps. But we all march to our own drummer. - CA_TravelerExplorer IIIYikes - The cheapest solid state one is $212 and then on up. I'll stick with my lowly Blue Seas CB.

That's a DC CB and not AC.

- pianotunaNomad IIImena,
Another way to go is solid state. When I did my upgrade that was pie in the sky tech.
