A/C compressor will not shut off

Question

My grandson and family are living in my Dutchman 5th wheel while their house is being repaired from hurricane Michael damage.  Last night he called and told me the a/c compressor does not shut off after the fan shuts down. He is manually flipping the breaker to cut it off at night. Any suggestions on what to look for in figuring out what's going on..( i'm in Covington, GA., the trailer is in Lynn Haven, FL)

Sounds like a bad thermostat - might consider replacing - should be able to find a suitable replacement at any Big Box store.  Lots of threads discussing how to replace thermostat.

The relay on the circuit board is welded closed- he can try whacking it sharply, but it probably needs replacing.

From on top of the rig at the AC unit you can jump the two thermostat wires to get the unit to run. then un jumper them to get the unit to shut off. If the unit still runs then look at the relay on the board. if it shuts down after you remove the jump then Thermostat.

I've had it happen on two different units. Both were the compressor relay.

It could be the thermostat also. If you disconnect the compressor wire on the back of the thermostat you will know which is the problem.

The relays are cheap if you can solder, otherwise it would require the whole control board.

One thought.. on SOME units (Heat pumps) it is normal for the compressor to run for a BRIEF time after blower shut down.. Like 30 seconds.
