A/C just started making a deep hum...

I installed a 2nd A/C in the bedroom last summer, a Mach 8. I replaced the fan blade to make it quieter and it's worked great all year. But just recently...just as you're turning the A/C on it sounds normal for a second then this deep hum starts in. It feels like a vibration. You can feel it in the floor. Seems like something might be loose. Do they need tightening after awhile when you first install them? If so, what...the main bolts that secure it to the roof? I got it screwed in so tight when I first installed it. Waited a bit for it to adjust, then tightened it some more. Repeated this until it wouldn't turn anymore. Hard to believe it could be that.

  • Nah, won't work I don't think. Not enough room for another hole and the rubber foot has a bolt sticking up but it turns out it's not the same bolt come in from underneath. There is a recessed place in the rubber foot for that second bolt to grab the foot. I have to pull out the panel inside (forgot, the wiring connects to that, so no disconnecting the wiring. I just have to unbolt the unit from the roof (that was not easy) and lift it and replace the bolt. Or screw it back into the recessed area. I just realized that there wasn't a broken off piece in that recesses area. The bolt just unscrewed from it so maybe I can reconnect it without pulling the unit up. There's about 5/8" of space under the unit (held up by foam pads around the edges so if I can get it up through the base with a stick, or something sticky from the top, I could screw that rubber foot back onto it. Then bolt the rubber foot to the fan motor. If it fell down through that hole it shouldn't be too hard to pull it back up....Famous last words....

X2-very short, or perhaps a pop rivit. Your could drill it out later if needed.
  • Very short, yes? So it will go through only the foot and the base of the A/C unit? And not the roof. I don't want to break or compromise the foot though and there's not a lot of room. I'll take a pic. I looked at it running and it doesn't look dangerous but that vibration can't be good for the other components (including the other feet.)

It only hums badly when the A/C is engaged. It sounds normal when it's just the fan.

Could the broken bolt by a symptom and not the problem? Everything else seems secure.
  • Well, that was easy to find. There are three small bolts that come up from under the bottom (what everything sits on) and hold the fan motor secure. There is a little nut on top of each one securing the fan to the base. One of the screws has a clean break between the base and the foot that is securing the fan motor. You can just lift the foot up off the base. The bolt has to be accessed from underneath but you can't reach it from inside. You have to lift the A/C unit up and access it from under the unit. I think. Can you think of any way to temporarily secure it without taking the whole thing apart? :( I don't have it in me to redo all the wiring etc right now. I really don't.Maybe I could lift it just enough without having to undo the wiring. Ugh. Is this kind of think covered by warranty? Might they makers of this thing pay to have someone come out and fix it? They used a bolt that just broke off for no reason. Everything else is secure.

I would also check the 120VAC voltage... It may be too low to start the Air Conditioner... If the 120VAC voltage is ok then I would look at the Air Conditioner START CAPACITOR to see if it looks normal - Not bulging etc...

  • dirt robbers? I've been using it daily for months.

Oh...wasps. I'll take the cover off and see if anything is loose or looks out of place. It runs but it doesn't sound god at all. Is there anything about the compressor that could cause that kind of vibration?
